The slow-train packing list
Twelve things that turn a long ride from an ordeal into the best part of the trip. Nothing exotic — just the items you'll wish you'd brought.
The essentials
- A light layer. Air-conditioned carriages run cold once the lights drop.
- An eye mask and earplugs. Stations are bright and the carriage never fully sleeps.
- A power bank. Sockets exist but aren't guaranteed at your berth.
- Wet wipes and hand sanitiser. The most-used items in any rail bag.
- Snacks and a refillable bottle. The trolley is a backup, not a plan.
- Flip-flops. For the walk to the washroom at the end of the carriage.
The quality-of-life extras
- A small towel. Quick-dry, doubles as a pillow or a curtain.
- Printed tickets and passport copies. Paper survives a dead battery.
- Local cash in small notes. Station vendors don't take cards.
- A book. The window is the entertainment, but a book fills the dark hours.
- A padlock. Peace of mind for a bag while you sleep.
- A plastic bag. For damp clothes, rubbish, or keeping electronics dry.
Pack one small bag for the night and stow the rest. You'll thank yourself at 2am.
